Meditation Monday: Introduction

"Make me understand the way of Your precepts; So shall I meditate on Your wonderful works."  ~ Psalm 119:27 NKJV Mondays are tough. But they're awesome. Monday is the most common day for heart attacks . If you don't like your job, it can be tough to get out of bed on Mondays. At the same time, Monday is a day full of possibilities, where our strength's been recovered by the weekend. It's a busy day. An exciting day. A day where we can be overwhelmed, yet thankful for the fresh start. My posts tend to be long (I'm naturally wordy). But for the month of September, I'm going to try to make this series brief. A verse to think on. To meditate on. A few thoughts. That's it. I hope to keep them under 250 words. Because we're busy. And our busyness (at least for me) tends to make us push aside God. But if we just take the time, we find that God can help us get through the crazy hours, the crazy days, ...

Let me tell you about one of the times* I failed to make Resident Assistant at my college. You see, my college had several hoops you had to jump through to make the cut. First, because it is a Christian college, we had two Bible tests to pass. Of course, because I can skunk an elephant at his own game, I passed those. Then was a super long, dreadfully boring and probably kind of useless application to fill out (I wonder how much they actually used any of the info they asked for in their decision, and how much they just wanted to see who'd be willing to sit the tortuous hours to fill it out). Me being me (by which I mean I usually don't know when to quit) of course spent who knows how long filling it out, then rereading it and reworking it until I got sick of it and decided it was good enough.** Then came the fun part. If you filled out the application, and weren't judged to be totally inadequate for the job, they put you through the ringer. Also known as RA Qualif...

Time for a Sunny Saga! Sunny: cheeky little bird If you read this post , you probably remember I have two pet birds. Today I'm going to tell you a little more about Sunny. Sunny is quite spunky. We found him one day inside the fence of the pool, crawling along on the stones and trying to eat grass seeds (by the way, stones are worthless for keeping weeds down). After a futile search for his owner, my parents let us keep him. He eventually became my bird and my responsibility (eventually my other bird came into the picture, but that wasn't until later). That was about sixteen years ago. He's still hopping along, being a regular nuisance. And since cockatiels can live to be thirty, he promises to be a pain-in-the-tail-feathers for quite a bit more (think carefully before you get a bird from the parrot family). The average age is fifteen years, so technically he's already pushing it. But for being an old dude, he's still rather sprightly. I take both birds ...

What is love?

So I get songs stuck in my head constantly (well, okay, not when I'm sleeping). It doesn't matter what happens, I'll probably be reminded of a song. Like when I finish a task, the song "Looks Like We Made It" by Barry Manilow runs through my head. Or at least the first line of the chorus does ("looks like we made it..."). Same with when I finally get a point someone's trying to make. Only then it's usually "And at last I see the light..." from TANGLED's "I See the Light" .* The annoying part of it is, I don't always remember the entire song. It's usually only the first or second line of the chorus that runs through my head, and then I usually find myself wondering what the rest of the song is about, and sometimes that leads to an internet search. Which is what happened today. This time, the song was  "What is Love?" . And after reading the rest of the lyrics, I can tell you one thing: love is N...

3 things I've learned about faith so far

So yesterday was my birthday (yay! another year farther away from twenty and closer to thirty!!!). And while I've still have a lot to learn (and hopefully I'll learn a lot before I reach thirty), God's also taught me a lot about what it means to have faith in Him. So today, I thought I'd share three things I've learned so far. 1. It's okay if you have no clue what's happening This has almost been the state of my twenties so far. Not knowing what's going on, how God is going to work this whole thing out, what exactly He wants me to do with all these varying interests and talents He's given me. But He's shown me that it's okay. I don't need to know. I don't need to know exactly how it's going to turn out. After all, what He has for me to accomplish in my twenties is probably far different than what He has in store for me in my thirties. All I need to do is trust that He's got it covered, and strive after doing His will with ...

"Things so much worse than death!"

So I love Disney movies. And if you've ever noticed, the villains usually get the best quotes (not fair, Disney). Like this one from The Return of Jafar : "there are things so much worse than death!" Go ahead, say it in as raspy a voice as you can, it's just so much fun to say*. But you know what? I think Jafar's dead on (no pun intended). After all, right off the top of my head, I can think of at least three: 1. Not having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ 2. Watching your unsaved loved ones go through their lives without that relationship with Christ 3. When someone eats the last piece of cornbread** Okay, so at least there's an easy fix for the last one. Go make yourself some more. Or get thee over to the Super Walmart. But since this isn't a cooking blog or a shopping blog, I'll let you solve that. Let's talk about #1. You see, accepting Christ's gift of salvation is only the beginning of having a personal relationsh...

Lost

Life isn't easy. We all know that, I'm not saying anything new here. And sometimes we feel utterly lost. It doesn't matter what age we are. You could be a teen, in your twenties, or older. You could be in your dream job, or waiting tables trying to break into your dream job. You could have a house full of crazy toddlers, or you could be praying desperately for a baby, or maybe your babies are grown and gone. But sometimes, we just feel lost. We don't know what's going on in our lives. We don't know what God's doing. We don't know how He's going to fix the mess we got ourselves into. We don't know how everything could turn into something wonderful .We feel as if we've missed the mark, as if we failed, as if we've skipped by His plans for us like a blissfully ignorant little grasshopper which got stepped on the next minute. But God isn't done with us. Think about how He chased after Jonah, how He chased after Paul. Think about h...
